SUMMERTIME 3 X’s by CHAZZ & HAMP, ELLA & POPS and by THE LOWE & THE BRUTE & 2 YouTube Clips

Since no one said that this little series has to be chronological, I skipped forward in time, and added what was supposed to be the 4th playlist with Gershwin’s “Summertime”.

As usual, not much text, just the (linked) album titles, the covers, and the particular personnel & dates. — Blog owner’s note: All tracks have been transferred from the original LP’s.

#1: Mingus Trio with Charles Mingus (b, ld) Hampton Hawes (p) Dannie Richmond (d) – July 2, 1957.

#2: Porgy & Bess with Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, under the direction of Russell Garcia – August 18, 1957
(so, almost an anniversary!).

Porgy & Bess with Mundell Lowe & His All Stars: Mundell Lowe (g, ld) Art Farmer (tp) Don Elliot (mel, vib) Ben “The Brute” Webster (ts) Tony Scott (bs) George Duvivier (b) Osie Johnson (d) – Webster Hall
(yeah, the “Kind Of Blue” studio!), NYC, July 16, 1958.

Just lean back, and try to enjoy this very cool Summer (the word “cool” unfortunately in its very meaning). — Some spicy noodles with shrimps could help for getting some summerly heat.

Addendum:

Steve Provizer had the very same idea some days earlier, and posted a thread with some “Summertime’s” HERE. There’s also a clip from the 1993-film-version of the opera with Harolyn Blackwell, dubbing Paula Ingram:

Here’s the opening scene from Otto Preminger’s epic film from 1959:
