THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE BEAUTIFUL LADIES ∽ A SUITE, DEDICATED TO RIFFTIDES

Hi there, swingin’ folks, devoted readers of Doug Ramsey’s Rifftides, and hopefully also of my blog:

The suite, consisting of four different versions of George Gershwin’s ‘Oh! Lady Be Good’ is up now, for all your listening pleasure.

My very talented students band Um die Ecke (‘Round The Corner) – ranging from 20 to 75 – did a mighty fine job (especially at the second part of the piece, A Bad Lady In Six Flats, which is my new line on ‘Lady Be Good’ in Gb!).

Feel free to go HERE for learning more.

The four chromatically ascending movements are:

1Lady Be Good in F, played in a “Dixieland” style…
2A Bad Lady In Six Flats, the new melody in Gb, sounds “coolish”…
Freentermezzo on G7#11 by the trio — into…
3Oh! Lady Be Good in G, no theme, only improvisation…
4Lady Be Good by Mary Lou Williams (a.k.a. Rifftide) in Ab, only the intro, the theme, extro & fine.

Here it is, the initial performance of the suite, as played by Um die Ecke, ‘live’ at the ‘Summer Festival of the Open Jazz House School’ (Sommerfestival der Offenen Jazzhaus Schule), at Cologne’s Eigelstein Torburg, on July 1, 2012.

The personnel: Flute, clarinet, drums, violin, piano, tenorsax, bass & yours truly Brew, assisting on Dixieland horn ;)

…and to all the gorgeous Ladies, who were roaming Cologne’s Eigelstein on that sunny afternoon, respectively to the four lovely waitresses at the Lapidarium pub, who served us a “corona” of cool Kölschs (plenty of Pils for me) after the performance.

A grand P.S. by the “King of Swing”:
